Why Does Kinetic Sports Medicine and Performance Exist?
Why Did We Open Kinetic Sports Medicine and Performance?
This is Part 2 of the What, Why, Who and Where of Kinetic Sports Medicine and Performance. Check out Part 1.
Lauren and I feel that athletes are an underserved population. I realize this sounds crazy as it seems like every third chiropractor, therapist and doctor specializes in “athlete rehab,” “performance therapy,” or is a “sports specialist.” It’s a great marketing tagline to get people in the door. We 100% agree that many non-athletes in rehabilitation need to be treated more like “athletes.” But often these clinics do not specialize in the unique needs of athletes.
Sport is demanding, to return to sport after rehabilitation requires a thorough, well planned and demanding rehabilitation process, to prepare the body for the stress it will endure when the athlete returns to play.
Many athletes coming back from injury are under-loaded, under-conditioned, and not tested well enough. This sets athletes up for re-injury or to never return to the field. Recent research supports this concern:
- Only 15% of athletes after ACL injury passed the most basic return to play tests
- Almost 40% of athletes returning from ACL injury are likely to suffer 2nd ACL injury (either the same side or the opposite side)
- The number one risk factor for any injury, is a previous injury
Lauren and I decided to form Kinetic Sports Medicine and Performance out of desire to help athletes. We perform a thorough assessment, design a program to restore your physical capacity before injury, frequently reassess to track progress and work with your performance coaches, sport coaches and physicians to get you back on the field when you are ready to return to perform.
